Understand Military Engine Technology and Performance Trade-Offs

Course Overview

Military Engine Technology examines the characteristics that make an engine suitable for demanding military vehicle applications. This self-paced online course introduces the fundamental engine technologies and performance characteristics influencing power delivery, fuel consumption, and vehicle integration. It provides essential knowledge for engineers and technical project staff who need to interpret engine performance information, understand alternative engine technologies, and relate propulsion characteristics to requirements, acquisition, and support activities.

Learners develop essential knowledge progressing from military operating requirements through engine performance characteristics to alternative propulsion technologies. Installed power, power density, parasitic losses, and partial-load behavior establish the foundation for examining spark-ignition and compression-ignition engines. Fuel consumption maps connect engine operating conditions with fuel use and efficiency, while turbocharging and supercharging demonstrate methods of increasing engine performance. Emissions-control systems introduce additional integration and operating considerations. Ground gas turbines provide a contrasting propulsion architecture, highlighting the performance characteristics, advantages, and limitations that distinguish them from conventional combustion piston engines in military vehicle applications.

Course content and quizzes develop learners’ understanding of the key technologies and performance characteristics influencing military vehicle engine selection and application. Learners will be better equipped to interpret fundamental engine performance information and fuel consumption maps, distinguish between principal engine technologies, and understand their respective advantages and limitations. This technical foundation supports more informed discussions with propulsion specialists and provides a basis for further study of military vehicle transmissions, drivelines, and automotive performance. As part of the course, participants receive a PDF copy of the course presentation slides, ensuring continued learning and practical application of course concepts.

Course Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the principal engine performance parameters used in military vehicle applications.
  • Describe the operating characteristics of spark-ignition engines, compression-ignition engines and ground gas turbines.
  • Interpret the fuel-map and partial-load relationships presented in the course.
  • Explain how turbocharging, supercharging and emissions-control systems affect engine operation.
  • Compare diesel and ground gas-turbine propulsion using the military considerations presented in the course.
