Understand Military Logistic Vehicle Design and System Interfaces

Course Overview

Military Logistic Vehicle Design examines the fundamental design issues underpinning specialist military vehicles used in operational logistic support roles. This self-paced online course covers chassis design and key role variants, including tray, tractor, integrated load-handling, and recovery configurations. It provides essential knowledge for engineers, integrated logistic support personnel, and technical project staff involved in defining operational needs and technical requirements for the transport, towing, load handling, and recovery of equipment.

Learners develop essential knowledge of vehicle architecture, mechanical interfaces, and specialist load-handling and recovery systems. Cab, chassis, subframe, and load-sharing suspension arrangements establish the foundation for different logistic vehicle configurations. Towing couplings, D-values, V-values, and fifth wheels introduce the design considerations associated with trailer and tractor configurations. Integrated load-handling systems examine loading mechanisms, DIN locks, frames, flatracks, and critical interface dimensions. Recovery vehicle content extends this foundation to lifting-arm arrangements, rear lifting, and load-versus-speed relationships that influence recovery vehicle configuration and performance.

Course content and quizzes develop learners’ understanding of the key engineering principles, design parameters, and technical trade-offs involved in military logistic vehicle design. Learners will be better equipped to identify important configuration considerations, interpret critical vehicle and equipment interfaces, and recognize how transport, towing, load-handling, and recovery requirements influence vehicle design. This practical understanding supports more informed technical decision-making and engagement with vehicle designers, integrators, and requirements developers. As part of the course, participants receive a PDF copy of the course presentation slides, ensuring continued learning and practical application of course concepts.

Course Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the principal configurations and requirements of military logistic vehicles.
  • Explain how chassis, suspension and towing interfaces influence logistic vehicle arrangements.
  • Describe the components and interfaces of the integrated load-handling systems presented.
  • Interpret the lifting arrangements, critical dimensions and load-versus-speed relationships in the course examples.
