Why Technical Workforce Training Matters
I founded the Eggler Institute of Technology after more than three decades working on complex defense engineering, military technology and capability development programs around the world. Those experiences taught me that technical professionals need more than theoretical knowledge. They need the practical knowledge, technical judgment and critical-thinking skills to solve difficult problems, make sound decisions and apply what they know when information is incomplete and the consequences matter.
This became the foundation of the Eggler Institute: developing defense engineering and technical professionals through specialist, practice-based learning that can be applied directly in the workplace.Lessons From Complex Defense Engineering Programs
Throughout my career, I have worked with highly experienced engineers, military personnel and technical specialists from defense organizations and industry across Australia, the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Working alongside these professionals taught me an important lesson: expertise develops faster when people understand not only what to do, but why engineering principles, methods and decisions work in real situations.
That understanding helps technical professionals think critically, recognize relationships between complex problems and make better-informed engineering decisions. These capabilities are particularly important in defense, where technical teams routinely work across complex systems, competing requirements and operational constraints.
Lessons From the Australian Bushmaster Program
One of the most important experiences of my career came when I was appointed to help turn around Australia’s Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicle program. At the time, the program faced significant technical and program related challenges that seriously threatened its continuation.
Drawing on nearly two decades of military vehicle engineering and program management experience, I worked with my project team and Thales Australia to identify the fundamental technical, requirements and program-management issues and develop practical solutions to address them. The program subsequently progressed into production, and the Bushmaster has become one of Australia’s most successful sovereign military vehicle capabilities.
The experience reinforced something that has remained central to my professional philosophy: complex engineering problems are rarely solved by specialist knowledge alone. Engineers also need systems thinking, sound technical judgment, an understanding of fundamental project management and risk principles, and the ability to apply their knowledge across disciplinary boundaries.
Turning Hard-Won Engineering Experience Into Practical Learning
My interest in transferring these lessons into professional education led me to develop and teach a specialist military vehicle technology course at the University of New South Wales, Canberra. It demonstrated the value of bringing real engineering problems, practical experience and defense context into the undergraduate learning environment.
That experience ultimately helped shape the Eggler Institute. Working with my son Daniel and growing a network of expert instructors with military, industry and academic experience, we developed a highl effective learning approach specifically for engineering and technical professionals working in complex defense environments.

The pandemic was a turning point, inspiring us at Eggler Institute to redefine our educational approach and rise to global prominence. With the world in flux, I utilized my expertise at the University of New South Wales to transform conventional teaching methods, pioneering innovative strategies for my Mechanical design courses such as live-streamed manufacturing sessions and assembly and testing by proxy events. This personalized assessment provided each student with an immersive, authentic, real-world learning experience and outcome even in a remote learning setting.
This shift was not merely reactive; it was a strategic move to enhance educational offerings, providing deeper, practical insights to participants. Because of this, I was honored with the Educational Excellence and Innovation Award in 2020 and 2021 – a testament to our commitment to delivering superior learning experiences, no matter the circumstances.

Dr Chris Hollier
Military Communications Technology
Chris has over 30 years’ experience as a senior project engineer and project manager, including over 20 years, covering projects in military command, control and communications systems. He also lectured at the Australian Defence Academy where he taught Masters level courses in military communications, surveillance and guided weapons technology.
Dr Daniel Eggler
Mechanical Design & Vibration
Daniel has over 10 years’ experience delivering education excellence in the field of mechanical engineering. He is recognized as a highly accomplished tertiary education educator and was the senior mechanical design lecturer at the UNSW Sydney for 7 years. Daniel as awarded UNSW Faculty of Engineering – Educational Excellence & Innovation award in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
Mr Jeff Viel
EMI/EMC/E³ Testing and Design
Jeff brings over 30 years of EMI/EMC/E³ expertise in aerospace, defense, and telecommunications. He has supported 14 NTS test facilities globally, providing technical training, leading qualification programs, and conducting design assessments. His work spans U.S. Department of Defense branches and federal agencies like the FAA and DOE. Widely regarded as a subject matter expert, Jeff specializes in DoD electromagnetic interference and control requirements for electronic systems, subsystems, and equipment.
Mr Jim Ellwood
Reliability Engineering
Jim has over 25 years experience in the analysis and management of highly complex, safety related systems in the aerospace, defence, utilities and infrastructure industries. He has established and managed RAM and safety programmes, and conducted reliability, maintenance, risk and hazard analyses across a range of industries and technologies.
Mr Mark Eggler

Mark is a senior professional engineer and project manager with over 30 years' experience working on large complex military technology projects. He has worked for the Australian Department of Defence and leading defense industry organizations on major acquisition programs.
Mr Mark Schweikert
Mark has over 15 years of experience in Defence Test & Evaluation. As Director of the Australian Defence Test & Evaluation Organisation (ADTEO), he oversaw the development and approval of major project test plans. Mark co-authored Defence’s first T&E Roadmap and developed related policies and manuals. Mark has presented numerous papers at the International Systems Engineering Test and Evaluation Conference and delivered various Defence T&E upskilling courses.

Mirela has over 20 years of experience working as a professional engineer and risk management specialist. She has worked in the automotive, defence and energy sectors. She now specialises in technical risk management consulting and training.
