This five-day Systems Engineering and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) workshop is designed primarily to develop systems engineers who can apply a disciplined, end-to-end systems engineering processes on complex defense programs. Using ISO 15288-aligned processes, participants logically progress through the key areas of operational analysis/mission engineering, functional analysis, requirements development, design synthesis, and verification and validation.
A continuous workshop design thread runs throughout the course, based on the conceptual development of a next-generation advanced armored fighting vehicle. Participants work progressively from operational scenarios and stakeholder needs to mission analysis, setting system boundaries, defining operational needs, undertaking functional decomposition, developing physical architecture and interfaces, writing functional and technical requirements, and verification planning.
The vehicle design thread provides a practical context for applying MBSE and systems engineering techniques to the multidisciplinary challenges associated with military vehicle development. Participants develop integrated operational, functional, and physical models; assess design alternatives and technical risks; establish requirements traceability; and consider how competing capability, mobility, protection, firepower, integration, supportability, cost, and schedule requirements influence system-level engineering decisions.
By progressively developing an integrated set of systems engineering products, participants learn how the individual processes combine into a coherent engineering method. Outputs include a Systems Engineering Management Plan, an Operational Concept Document (OCD), Performance Specification (PSPEC), functional and physical system architectures, Interface Control Document and diagrams, and a Verification Program Plan and Verification Cross Reference Matrix (VCRM).
Participants receive a full-color printed training folder, ensuring continued learning and practical application of course concepts.
Course Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- •Formulate a systems engineering management plan that integrates key technical and managementwork needed for a defined defense system.
- •Construct an operational model from stakeholder needs and scenarios, and derive operational requirements and an Operational Concept Document.
- •Analyze system behavior to develop functional models, derive functional and technical requirements, and establish requirements traceability.
- •Synthesize functions, requirements, constraints, and interfaces into a coherent physical architecture and evaluate design alternatives and trade-offs.
- •Apply requirements and configuration management methods to establish and control technical baselines.
- •Apply MBSE methods to develop integrated operational, functional, and physical system models with end-to-end traceability.
- •Evaluate technical risks and relevant non-functional requirements when making system design decisions.
- •Design a verification and validation program that links system requirements to verification methods, work packages, and planned evidence.
