Course Overview

Understand Systems Engineering and Its Role in Successful Defense Programs

This one-day Systems Engineering – Military Applications Insights Seminar gives non-technical and non-specialist personnel a practical overview of systems engineering and its contribution to successful capability and acquisition outcomes. It is designed for project managers, capability developers, business analysts, integrated logistics support staff, finance personnel, and other stakeholders who work with systems engineers but do not need to perform the role themselves.

Participants are introduced to the systems engineering lifecycle and the purpose of key processes including systems engineering management, operational analysis/mission engineering, functional analysis, requirements development, architecture design, design synthesis, configuration management, and verification and validation. Defense-focused examples show how these activities interact with project management, logistics, cost, schedule, and capability decisions.

The seminar focuses on awareness and informed participation. Participants gain the terminology and context needed to recognize where key technical decisions are made, identify information required by engineering teams, and appreciate how weak requirements, poorly defined boundaries, unmanaged interfaces, or late verification planning can affect project outcomes. This common foundation helps non-engineering staff participate more effectively in technical reviews, planning, and multidisciplinary decision-making.

Participants receive a full-color printed training folder, ensuring continued learning and practical application of course concepts.

Course Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define systems engineering and explain its role in the development and acquisition of complex defense systems.
  • Identify the major stages and processes within the systems engineering lifecycle and V-model.
  • Explain how systems engineering interacts with project management, capability development, logistics, and other project functions.
  • Identify how poorly defined requirements, system boundaries, interfaces, and verification planning can adversely affect cost, schedule, and system performance.
  • Interpret common systems engineering terminology and information sufficiently to contribute more effectively to technical reviews, planning, and multidisciplinary project decisions.
