Course Overview

Build a Working Foundation in Military Vehicle Technology and Mobility

Introduction to Military Vehicle Technology and Mobility is a two-day onsite course that develops a structured engineering foundation for professionals working with combat and logistic vehicles. It is suited to systems engineers, requirements developers, acquisition specialists and military personnel who need more than broad awareness but do not yet require calculation-intensive practitioner training. The course builds a working technical vocabulary and explains how operational needs, technical requirements, vehicle configuration and subsystem behavior combine to influence vehicle performance.

Across ten modules, participants examine vehicle design, ground mobility, powertrains, automotive performance, tires and tracks, handling, suspension and whole-body vibration. The course explains how engine output and transmission ratios produce tractive effort, how resistance to motion affects speed and gradeability, and how soil strength and ground pressure influence terrain mobility. It also introduces springs, dampers, sprung and unsprung mass, together with the handling concepts of understeer, oversteer and neutral steer.

Military vehicle examples and active learning activities connect these principles with requirements, acquisition and engineering decisions. Participants apply selected concepts to simple handling scenarios, explain why increased engine power alone does not guarantee improved mobility, and relate suspension choices to ride quality and vibration exposure. The course strengthens cause-and-effect reasoning and prepares participants to progress toward performance interpretation, design trade-off analysis and more advanced military vehicle engineering work.

Course Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define key vehicle performance terms, including tractive effort, gradeability, ground pressure, and ride quality.
  • Explain how operational requirements influence vehicle configuration and the balance between mobility, firepower, and protection.
  • Explain how engine output, transmission ratios, and resistance to motion influence automotive performance.
  • Explain how soil strength, ground pressure, and tire or track characteristics influence ground mobility.
  • Explain how springs, dampers, and sprung and unsprung mass affect ride quality and whole-body vibration.
  • Apply the principles of understeer, oversteer, and neutral steer to predict vehicle responses in simple handling scenarios.
